EMPLOYMENT:

2007- 2018  Adjunct Instructor, University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and Owens Community College.  Teaching a variety of fine art studio classes and lecture labs.  Additional visiting artist lectures, workshops and demonstrations at all the above schools.

1997-2004  Account Representative & Designer, Let There Be Neon, New York, NY.
I worked closely with a diverse group of clients developing residential, commercial and corporate concepts for challenging projects worldwide.  As part of a hands-on team I designed and engineered projects, overseeing manufacturing, fabrication and installation of projects ranging from architectural lighting, unique signage and artistic products utilizing cold cathode and neon.

1996 -1997  Coordinator “Young Artists At Work”, Arts Commission of Greater Toledo.
The “Young Artists At Work” program employs high school students creating works of art for sale and display.  My responsibilities included hiring of teachers and students.  Duties included planning, organizing and managing of curriculum, budget, materials, tools and supervising the entire day to day operation of this special summer program.

1988-1996  Owner, Philip Hazard Studio,  Tucson, AZ.
Located in the heart of Tucson’s downtown Arts District.  This multi-use space served as film studio, art gallery and workshop space for my mixed media artwork and performance space for the larger community within the arts district.

1986-1996  Partner,  Neo Neon Inc.  New York, NY.
This gallery and workshop exhibited neon as an art form, creating custom fine art objects with neon and alternative light.  Hosting group exhibits of light artists nationwide.

1980-1986  Partner,  Neon City Inc.  New York, NY.
Custom neon sign shop, manufacturing, fabrication and installation of neon signs.

1975-1980  Designer/Craftsman, Let There Be Neon Inc.  New York, NY.

BIOGRAPHY:

Philip Hazard lived in New York City for over 25 years, being inspired by the energized sides of a big city aesthetic and idealized pop culture. Hazard’s diverse personal life experiences influence the content and subject matter of his multi-layered mixed media work.

Hazard combines and layers oil and acrylic paint, photographic silkscreen, mixed media collage and assemblage on canvas to explore the larger context of the relationship between disparate images and their dialogue. Neon is used as the focus and emphasis within his work.

Philip Hazard describes his work as “mixed media painting combined with collage and assemblage”.  Neon tubing is also included in some of his work. Hazard’s mixed media and neon artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Mr. Hazard’s artwork has been published in several books and magazines, including the books Tools as Art, Contemporary Neon and the Japanese magazine Pronto. His artwork is included in many public and private collections including the National Building Museum in Washington DC and the US Embassy in Katmandu Nepal.

Recent exhibitions include Parkwood Gallery at the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, Flatlanders Art Galleries in Blissfield Michigan, The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance in Narrowsburg New York and Zenith Gallery in Washington DC. Mr. Hazard has been represented by Zenith Gallery since 1988.

Philip Hazard also has a background in film and theatre. Two plays written by Mr. Hazard have been produced Off-Off Broadway in New York City. Hazard has written and directed films and videos, which have been screened at a variety of venues including the Arizona International Film Festival and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Hazard received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University in 2007.  He has a B.A. from the University of Toledo in Film and Design. He studied screenwriting and film directing at New York University Film School.

After a long career in the neon sign industry in New York City, Mr. Hazard most recently taught studio art classes at Bowling Green State University, University of Toledo and Owens Community College. Currently Hazard concentrates on creating his Neon and Mixed Media artwork.
